Specialised Thyroid Procedures
Comprehensive Thyroid Imaging & Care
Dr Berk has a special interest in Thyroid, parathyroid and head-and-Neck ultrasound, and has many years of post specialization dedicated training and experience in this field. He is often called on to perform complex diagnostic and interventional procedures, especially in the field of accurate diagnosis and staging of thyroid nodules and tumors.
These procedures are designed to optimize patient management and can reduce the need for more extensive treatment. He strives to provide each patient with care and compassion, and guide their diagnostic journey.
Thyroid Ultrasounds
Clarity & Guidance
A thyroid ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to examine the thyroid gland. It is the most accurate way to detect thyroid nodules, cysts, or abnormalities.
What to expect
Dr. Berk provides high-resolution thyroid ultrasounds, ensuring patients receive a precise diagnosis and a clear treatment plan.
- The procedure is painless and does not use radiation.
- You will lie comfortably while a small handheld device (transducer) is moved over your neck.
- The test usually takes 10–20 minutes.
- Results will be sent electronically to the referring doctors. When appropriate Dr Berk will discuss the findings during your visit.
Thyroid Biopsy (FNA)
Clear Results
This test helps determine whether a thyroid nodule is benign or requires further treatment, giving patients peace of mind and clarity about their health.
What to expect
This test helps determine whether a thyroid nodule is benign or requires further treatment, giving patients peace of mind and clarity about their health.
- A thyroid ultrasound is first performed to guide the biopsy.
- The skin is cleaned and a local anesthetic is applied to minimize discomfort
- A very fine needle is used to collect a small tissue sample from the thyroid nodule.
- The procedure usually takes 15–30 minutes and patients can return to normal activities immediately after.
- Results are typically available within a few days, and the laboratory will send these directly to the referring practitioner.
Ultrasound of the Parathyroid Gland
Safe & Accurate
This procedure uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the parathyroid glands, which are located near the thyroid gland in the neck.
What to expect
The ultrasound helps diagnose parathyroid gland disorders, such as hyperparathyroidism, by identifying gland enlargement or abnormalities.
- Dr Berk will use a probe to capture images of the parathyroid glands.
- The results will be interpreted by Dr. Berk, and a report will be sent to your referring physician.
- The test usually takes 15–30 minutes.
Ultrasound of the Neck & Salivary Glands
Targeted Imaging
This procedure uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the neck and salivary glands.
What to expect
The ultrasound helps diagnose various conditions, such as salivary gland stones, inflammation, or tumors.
- Dr Berk will use a probe to capture images of the neck structures.
- The results will be interpreted by Dr. Berk, and a report will be sent to your referring physician.
- The procedure typically takes 15–30 minutes.
Ultrasound-Guided Core Biopsies
Precise Diagnosis
The biopsy helps diagnose various conditions, such as cancer or thyroid disease.
What to expect
- Using ultrasound guidance, a needle will be inserted into the target area to obtain tissue samples.
- You may feel some discomfort or pressure during the procedure, but local anesthesia will be used to minimize pain.
- After the procedure, the tissue samples will be sent for laboratory analysis, and you will be monitored for a short period before discharge.
- The test typically takes 30–60 minutes.
Ultrasound-Guided Alcohol Ablation of Thyroid Cysts & Tumors
Effective Ablation
This procedure involves using ultrasound guidance to inject alcohol into thyroid cysts or tumors, causing shrinkage or destruction of the abnormal tissue.
What to expect
The procedure helps alleviate symptoms and may reduce the need for surgery.
- Using ultrasound guidance, a needle will be inserted into the thyroid cyst or tumor, and alcohol will be injected.
- You may feel some discomfort or pressure during the procedure, but local anesthesia will be used to minimize pain.
- After the procedure, you will be monitored for a short period before discharge, and follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor the effectiveness of the procedure.
- The procedure typically takes 30–60 minutes.
